Earth Day is a quiet reminder that how we travel matters. The African bush asks nothing, and somehow leaves us with everything that matters 🌍 I had something else in mind to share today, but as it is Earth Day, I could not resist taking us quietly back to Africa, and to the eleventh of 15 lodges I inspected on my November journey. Another Zambia chapter, this time in a softer, more intimate rhythm. Just upstream from the thunder of Victoria Falls, Sindabezi Island rests quietly in the Zambezi 🛶 Some of my favourite memories here unfolded so naturally. Carefully navigating past families of hippos on the boat ride to the island. The warm welcome from Towela and the team on the jetty, with smiles so wide they were impossible to forget 😄 And that inviting hammock, swaying in the breeze with the river stretched out beyond. Real connections like this remind me how much relationships matter. After 20 years in luxury travel, it is the strength of my contact network and trusted partnerships that so often makes the difference between a nice trip and one that feels truly special and memorable. When I return for my second honeymoon, I already have an iconic Sampan dinner floating on the Zambezi and a seasonal sandbar lunch set in the middle of the river very firmly in mind 😉🤞 Earth Day feels especially fitting here. The mighty Zambezi river writes its own rhythm, we simply learn to listen softly... A gentle return to Africa and to the 10th lodge of 15 inspected on my November journey. Set on a tranquil stretch of the Zambezi River, so close to Zimbabwe and equally close to Victoria Falls. Zambia felt softly spoken, grounded and unhurried, with a bold, earthy honesty. The quiet, gracious nature of the Zambian people leaves it’s own gentle warmth 🌿 After an extensive site inspection including the organic garden, Tongabezi Trust school and a river excursion on the first electric eDhow in the world, we settled on the river deck with expansive views for lunch at The Lookout, a beautiful garden to table seasonal lunch of Zambian flavours. 🧘♀️ I would like to invite you to #PauseWithWendy, for just a few moments, to close your eyes gently, breathe slowly and imagine… Timber and thatch villas resting quietly along the riverbank. In the soft light of the late afternoon African sun, women in traditional dress pass beneath the trees with woven baskets in hand, a fleeting glimpse of daily life that somehow says everything. A floating dining deck waits for an intimate supper as the light turns honeyed. “Arrive as guests, leave as friends, return as family” Often spoken of as one of the world’s three most iconic hotels, yet in my heart it stands alone at number one ✨ I arrived under the graceful sweep of the half moon forecourt. I was not simply arriving. I was being received. The doorman stood with a composed elegance that felt timeless. An immaculate white uniform, tailored and precise, caught the light as I stepped forward. A soft glint of gold braid. A black sash drawn neatly across the chest. White gloves, pristine to the last detail. And the perfectly wrapped turban, so instantly recognisable and so deeply part of the hotel’s identity. Before I had even crossed the threshold, something had already shifted within me ✨ Inside, the air softened. Polished marble floors caught the light, white columns rose with quiet confidence and beyond, the harpist played. I had imagined this moment for years and it moved me to tears 🤍 Breakfast in the Tiffin courtyard felt like a soft morning ritual. Birdsong drifted through the tropical greenery and the faint clink of china lingered gently in the air. White colonnades framed tables dressed in crisp linen and silverware caught the morning light. When women support women, something beautiful begins to bloom 🌸 I am so grateful to be supported by a warm and generous local community, and I was delighted to curate a very special May escape to Madeira for the loveliest couple. A heartfelt thank you to Sue from Endermospa for trusting me to bring this special holiday to life ✨ Perched just above the shoreline in central Funchal, Savoy Palace enjoys a wonderfully elevated setting with sweeping Atlantic views. It feels close to the city’s restaurants, marina and old town, yet peacefully removed from the bustle below. By evening, the city begins to glow and the coastline curves away in soft lights, creating that quietly romantic Madeira feeling 🌙 I attended the Private Luxury Forum in Madeira and, as part of my destination inspection trip, my own favourite memories here are still in full flower. Standing high above the clouds at Pico do Arieiro at sunrise. Watching dolphins trace the waterline and having my own little Free Willy moment as a whale’s tail crashed through the ocean. Wandering through the cloud forest, taking in Porto Moniz and then sailing downhill in a wicker basket after the most wonderful visit to the tropical gardens 🌺 I can hardly wait to hear all about my clients’ visit during the upcoming Flower Festival. The intricate flower carpets, markets, parades, music filled atmosphere make this such a special time to be in Madeira.
