African Safaris: A Life-Changing Experience
I am often “What is your number one favourite holiday?” and, I must admit, it’s a complex question to answer. Every destination offers something unique, making it nearly impossible to choose just one. But when pressed, I always say that a first-time African safari is the most life-changing travel experience you can have.
There is truly nothing that compares to watching a cheetah chase an Impala across the plains under the stars on a night drive in the Sabi Sands Private Reserve. Or lying in the Loisaba Starbed in Laikipia, surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness, while the roar of a lion echoes in the early morning hours. It’s a reminder that, just like me, the lion might be signalling to the rest of the pride to gather and share the meal, or perhaps reunite with those separated. These are moments that stay with you for a lifetime—experiences that fill your heart with a profound connection to the wild.

One question I’m often asked is: “How much does a safari cost?” And this is another complex answer, as the cost varies depending on numerous factors. What animals would you most like to see? How many of them? Are you looking for an exclusive experience with fewer safari vehicles, or are you content with a larger group? The type of terrain and landscape you prefer, the season you wish to travel in, and whether you want to see large herds during the migration or enjoy a quieter time all play a role in determining the price.
Considerations such as the type of accommodation, number and types of transfers, conservancy and national park fees, and domestic flights must also be factored in. Moreover, there are additional details like visas, immunisations, and malaria medications to think about when planning your trip. To provide a rough estimate, my safaris generally start from $1,000 per person per night. For a seven-night holiday, I typically recommend three nights on safari and four nights of sun and sea for the perfect balance.

Some of my favourite African safaris include the extraordinary experiences I’ve had in Sabi Sands Game Reserve, where the beauty of the landscape and the wildlife truly takes your breath away. Another memorable safari was with the silverback gorillas in Rwanda, where I stayed at the One & Only Gorillas Nest—an intimate and incredible experience. I’ve also had the joy of spending time on a Galapagos Safari cruise, swimming with playful seals and basking in the sun while observing the unique blue-footed boobies.
While staying at Loisaba Tented Camp in Laikipia, Kenya, one moment stands out—watching a baboon, stuck in a tree for over an hour, while three lions sat just below, waiting patiently. These kinds of raw, authentic experiences are what make safaris so special. And then there’s Hwange National Park, with its rich diversity and the nearby Victoria Falls—a truly spectacular destination. The beauty of Zambia, with its diverse landscapes, also left a lasting impression. In Namibia, the towering dunes of Sossusvlei, the mysterious Skeleton Coast, and the rugged landscapes of Damaraland are all awe-inspiring and unforgettable.
