With World Gorilla Day this week, my heart returned to my trek in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Like a scene from Gorillas in the Mist, the forest lay quiet and then he appeared — a great silverback. A sudden tangle of love and wonder caught me and the same wild pull I felt the first time I looked across a room and instantly knew my own silverback would one day be my husband. They say we share 98% of our DNA; in that breathless moment it felt like 100%. A wild connection and love at first sight. It was a place where love for the wild and love in my own life seemed to braid together. This year’s Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony reminded me how precious each encounter is and how love and protection for these gentle giants runs deep in Rwanda. Gorilla tracking is not just an adventure. It is an encounter about wonder and belonging and the heart’s own wild map.
