A Magical Christmas at One Aldwych: A Stay to Remember
Christmas in London is always special, but spending it at One Aldwych made it truly magical. This year, my husband David and I decided to indulge in a restful and pampering Christmas break, embracing the festive spirit while enjoying the hotel's exceptional hospitality.
To fully immerse myself in the experience, I arrived at the hotel early—11am on Christmas Eve—while David finished up his half-day at work. My first stop? A quick hello to Lizzie and Spencer, the charming resident art dogs. They graciously accepted my attention but politely declined the treats I offered—clearly, they have refined tastes!

With time on my hands, I made my way straight to the Health Club at One Aldwych. My Christmas treat to myself was a wonderful 60-minute personalised, massage using Natura Bissé dry oils, a perfect way to ease into the holiday mood. The steam room and 18-metre chemical-free pool were tempting, but I had plans to meet David.
Stepping out into the crisp London air, I took a scenic stroll through Covent Garden towards Holborn Station, soaking up the festive atmosphere before meeting David at The Ship Tavern. Tucked away behind the station, this historic pub, dating back to the 1500s, is a hidden gem with a fascinating past—once serving as an underground church during King Edward VI’s reign. A couple of midday drinks (it was Christmas Eve, after all!) and a light bite later, we made our way back to the hotel to check in properly.

Our suite was ready—and oh, how ready it was! Beautifully decorated, it welcomed us with a twinkling Christmas tree, a personalised festive note from the team, and even a thoughtful present. One of my favourite surprises? A gorgeous One Aldwych Christmas bauble, a keepsake to bring out in future years, forever reminding us of this special stay.
After a long and indulgent afternoon snooze, we wandered through Covent Garden, taking in the seasonal cheer and admiring the ‘snow’ dusting the market square. For dinner, we opted for the simple comforts of room service—burgers, and beers. Sometimes, the best meals are the most unpretentious, and as my late grandmother Kathy always said, “The simple things in life are often the best.”
Christmas morning started early with a 7:30 am walk to take the dogs out, ensuring we caught the stunning sunrise over The London Eye and Embankment. Back at the hotel, we picked up the morning papers and settled into Indigo for, lime and blueberry brioche followed by her legendary full English breakfast—the perfect way to begin our Christmas Day.

Later, we attended an intimate Christmas drinks and canapés reception hosted by the General Manager, where we mingled with fascinating fellow travellers from around the world. This was followed by the much-anticipated Christmas lunch, and let’s just say—there was absolutely no dry turkey in sight!
Boxing Day morning meant one last indulgence—a relaxing spa and pool session—before gluten free buttermilk pancakes with blueberry compote and whipped cream another legendary breakfast and, reluctantly, preparing for departure. While we were sad to leave, we were excited to spend the rest of the holiday with family.
This was, without a doubt, the most peaceful, restful, and luxurious Christmas we’ve ever had—and definitely one to be repeated!
