A Journey to Pride Rock

During our recent trip to Kenya, deeply immersing ourselves in the Laikipia area, we had the incredible opportunity to visit Borana Conservancy—the home of Disney’s original inspiration for Pride Rock. When planning a holiday, my top tip is to anchor the itinerary around the most desired experience, and for me, this was it!

I first heard about Borana from Alex, a fellow travel community friend, during the Tanzania Roadshow in London. From that moment, it became a must-visit destination. Emmanuel from African Adventure Specialists expertly navigated the winding local roads while we enjoyed the slow drive through vibrant villages. Happy children waved excitedly, and we passed bustling markets, watching daily life unfold before us.

Spanning 32,000 acres, Borana Conservancy is a working ranch owned and operated by the Dyer family. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Tatiana Dyer with a refreshing drink. After freshening up, we toured the stunning property and explored the various accommodations on offer. Then, it was time for the highlight of our visit—Pride Rock!

Our guide Patrick was an absolute gem, patiently answering my countless questions about the area, the legendary rock, film crew visits, and the famous photographers, particularly David Yarrow, who captured its most iconic images. As a self-confessed photography enthusiast (a trait not entirely shared by my family!), this was the one day I insisted on stepping into the frame. Patrick indulged me, running up and down the steep incline to ensure I got the perfect shot. Standing atop that rock, channeling my inner Lion Queen, was an unforgettable moment!

Borana Conservancy offers a selection of luxurious accommodations, including Borana Lodge, Lengishu, Sirai House, Arijiju, and Laragai House. After our exhilarating rock adventure, we returned for a delightful poolside lunch with Tatiana. The meal was spectacular, but what truly took me by surprise was the Vanilla Parfait with Tree Tomato Coulis. My fascination with tree tomatoes began during our trip to Ecuador, and ever since, I’ve insisted on my sister planting them on her Two Old Cows Farm in Queensland, Australia.

This visit to Borana was more than just a tick on my bucket list—it was a deeply personal and awe-inspiring experience. I know I will be back, but next time, it will be with my 3- and 6-year-old grandsons, waking them up at dawn to enjoy a sunrise breakfast at the top of Pride Rock. I can’t wait to see their faces light up as they take in the same breathtaking view that inspired one of the greatest stories ever told.
